In the Flemish province of East Flanders, Belgian practice JUMA Architects have taken their signature minimalist approach to a secluded home in the woods.

East Flanders is regarded as one of Belgium’s most naturally beautiful regions for its green fields, dense woodlands, winding rivers and charming towns. Waasmunster, a small town between Ghent and Antwerp, is the setting of JUMA Architects’ latest project, Villa DF, comprising an overhaul and extension of a 1987 house in the woods. The result is a home embraced by nature, showcasing the firm’s refined, quintessentially Belgian style. “The house has undergone a major transformation, yet it still retains its soul,” JUMA Architects co-founder Mathieu Luyens says. “For us, a house must always have soul.”

The redesign entailed a front extension of the existing house to accommodate a three-car garage and a new outbuilding to accommodate two more cars. The material palette of the main house seamlessly extends to the outbuilding, ensuring a cohesive visual dialogue between the two volumes.

Additionally, the outdoor terrace and swimming pool were raised to maximise the evening sun, and a new pool pavilion was constructed to further encourage time outdoors. Different heights and viewpoints throughout the spaces render the home a “voyage of discovery, where residents will be amazed again and again by something new,” Mathieu says.

One of the sources of inspiration for the project was Studio David Thulstrup’s famous Noma restaurant in Copenhagen, characterised by a truncated copper roof. JUMA Architects’ opted for an alternative metal – a burgundy-coloured zinc – and employed it to craft a contemporary truncated roof for Villa DF, in place of its original pointed roof.

The austere zinc roof ridges stand in deliberate contrast with the new cream brick facade, chosen by the architects to infuse the house with a fresh, revitalised look amid its verdant surroundings. The bricks continue into the interiors, establishing a visual connection to the outdoors, which can be admired through expansive floor-to-ceiling steel-framed windows.
