Like many period homes, this house in the Melbourne seaside suburb of Williamstown was hampered by its dark and cramped conditions. Guided by Adam Kane Architects, it is now a serene, light-filled residence that quietly communicates poise and calm.

With sensitivity to the existing fabric and an eye for cohesion, the studio’s reimagining is softly organic and highly resolved. “The clients were committed to doing the original home justice,” architect Adam Kane explains. “They wanted to preserve what they could but also ensure it would stand for another hundred years.” While most of the house was stripped back to its frame, key heritage elements—such as the gabled front, weatherboards, and original layout—have been respectfully restored.

At the rear sits a contemporary pavilion-style extension that blurs the boundaries between inside and out. Opening on the side boundary to capture more garden views, the extension is grounded by a continuous flow of materials. While reduced in materiality, the selections seamlessly run inside to out, including burnished concrete floors and a dark metal cladding that transitions from zinc to waxed milled steel.

The entire home exudes a calm minimalism—neutral tones, gentle curves and concealed detailing all instil an effortless ease. To create a distinct language that honours the heritage bones, exaggerated cornices feather into the ceiling, hiding services and blending into door frames and joinery. Equally oversized skirting boards give a modern take on the traditionally ornate elements. Elsewhere built-in joinery sits deliberately flushed and aligned to create clean lines.

An unmistakeable highlight is the central spiral stair, crafted as an organic ribbon of undulating plaster, it blends into the architecture rather than shouting for attention.

In terms of spatial planning, the floor plan champions privacy, flow and versatility. Each zone is stacked and framed with careful intention: a rumpus room doubles as a guest suite with fold-down bed and ensuite, the cellar is accessed via a glass-and-steel-framed door. And work-from-home areas are bathed in natural light thanks to cleverly placed openings. “It’s all about creating sight lines and soft transitions,” Kane says, noting that “The house reveals itself gradually.”
