The 2,400-square-metre Bally exhibition hall occupies a corner of Porta Venezia, Milan. It displays the seasonal series of luxury fashion brands on the ground floor and accommodates communications, design and sales staff in three-storey offices.
Golden Gate Road, amphitheatre display racks and velvet furniture appeared in the gallery of the fashion brand Bally in Milan. The Italian studio Storagemilano was designed to suggest the dramatic past of the building.
At the turn of the 20th century, the building was operated as a theater, then became a cinema in 1925, and finally closed in the late 1980s.
Storagemilano Studio was told to remember this history when renovating interior decoration, which is now decorated with luxury materials such as marble, brass and velvet.
“Emphasis is placed on preserving key elements of the past and linking them to modern and modern attitudes to intervention.”
Visitors can enter the building through a circular foyer fixed by a huge rusty red marble countertop. A circular chandelier with neon letters hangs in the middle of the ceiling to spell out the brand name.
Although the existing brick surfaces in this space are only refreshed with white paint, the studio has replaced the formal dark windows with frameless glass panels, allowing more natural light for passers-by to see from the streets outside.
“The entrance is designed as a gallery space to rotate new works – to connect with the community and provide a window for Bally,” the brand added. “This is the lobby of our theatre.”
The same coloured marble is used to create three golden doorways for a long seat and frame space, which are rotated from the center of a tall brass plate to reveal or hide the interior showroom.
Here, shoes are displayed on stepped shelves to imitate the seats in the amphitheatre. Made of fibre reinforced concrete and based on wheels, blocks can be moved to create different display “scenes”.
Because clothes hang on slender brass railings connected to the surrounding walls, large drawers adorn the center of the room, decorated with rich egg-yellow fabric. Grey marble countertops and chairs designed by French architect Jean Prouve were also used to decorate the space.
The Blush Pink velvet carpet is placed on several points on the floor as a delicate visual nod to the heavy velvet curtain usually painted on the theater stage before the performance begins.
